The golden, or Syrian, hamster is a popular animal model for neuroscience research. Hamsters are employed in key areas of study, including reproductive endocrinology and behavior, development and regeneration of the visual system, and circadian rhythm regulation. This is the first atlas to present the complete hamster brain in three-dimensional coordinates for stereotaxic surgery, with diagrammatic representations of each coronal section. Coronal sections include photos of adjacent hemisections stained for cresyl violet and acetylcholinesterase. Labelled photographs of sagittal sections are also included. This atlas provides a pictorial synopsis of what is currently known about the structure and function of the hamster brain, as well as a consistent anatomical definition and nomenclature for each area. Key Features * Contains 58 stained coronal sections with matching detailed diagrams * Presents 10 sagittal sections with diagrammatic overlays * Stereotaxic coordinates for the precise placement of chemicals, lesions, and devices in the hamster brain * Serves as a pictorial synopsis of a large body of literature that has evaluated both the structure and the function of the hamster brain * Provides consistent anatomical definitions and nomenclature for brain areas * Includes a CD-ROM containing all of the illustrations, photos, and textMorin, Lawrence P. is the author of 'Stereotaxic Atlas of the Golden Hamster Brain', published 2001 under ISBN 9780125070409 and ISBN 0125070403.
